It has been more than three millennia since the ancient galactic empire crumbled and the Twilight Wars erupted. After a period of devastating conflict, the great races retreated into remote and safe areas of space. Now, at the brink of a new era, the great races are moving towards the heart of the galaxy once more. The ancient Galactic Council on the central planet Mecatol Rex is regaining its influence, but the balance of power is becoming increasingly fragile.

In the vast expanses of space, mighty fleets hover in tense anticipation, while trade wars rage across the stars. Ancient technologies are being rediscovered, and forgotten feuds remembered. Galactic tension is reaching unsustainable levels, and another war seems inevitable. As the great races prepare themselves for the struggle to come, they know one thing is certain: only one race will become the progenitor of a new galactic empire.

Twilight Imperium Third Edition allows players to take control of a powerful galactic civilization and guide their race to supremacy. Only by employing clever political negotiation, opening interstellar trade agreements, and waging merciless war will a player find the path to the imperial throne and victory.

With its unique tile-based game board, vast number of exciting player options, and hundreds of cards, Twilight Imperium Third Edition provides a unique game experience every time it is played. Detailed plastic pieces, high-quality components, and clever game design make Twilight Imperium Third Edition the definitive space-conquest, empire-building boardgame.

Fantastic game that will be entertaining you and your friends for many hours to come.
Playing this game was the best board gaming experience I have ever had. It truly gives you the feelings of running an intergalactic empire. The game also some how manages to have countless options of what to do during the course of a single turn but at the same time feel very intuitive and easy to play. The play times for this game are very long so you have to make a day off it to play but it is so very worth it. The replay ability is extremely high since the board is randomized and the base game comes with components for optional rules. Speaking of components the quality of what comes in the box is top notch. Everything from the minis to the cards has been extremely well crafted. If I have one complaint about the game it is that the plastic ships come attached to the spouses. Seeing how there are almost 350 of them and I sleeved the 400+ cards it took me in total over 4 hours to get this game ready to play. However that time spent putting into the game was more then worth it for the amount of enjoyment I have gotten from this game.

You can't get much better than this
If you're here, looking at reviews, you probably already know the one complain/downside: playtime. This game takes hours. But they're some of the best hours of gaming you'll have.

Twilight Imperium is huge and sprawling. It takes hours, and can be difficult to get to the table because of that. Even still, its my favorite game, hands down. I would gladly play this game at any time. There is just so much excellent going on. I could spend several paragraphs explaining the gameplay and mechanics and what makes it so good, but allow me to highlight my favorite element: politics.

Politics being awesome in a game sounds lame. But let me explain. Throughout the game, players take over various planets, that have various levels of influence. This influence can be used when someone takes the politics action. The person who takes the action then draws a card from a huge deck of politics cards. The players can use their influence as votes for these cards. Additionally, you can bribe and manipulate other players with promises not to attack, or give them trade tokens. These cards have a range of impact on the game. Some can benefit a single player, and others can change the very rules of the game.

I love the politics element because it actually feels like politics, but in a fun way. You have an motive, and try to manipulate others to vote with or against you. The discussion around these cards is so great. Its tough to put it into just words. Its just incredible.

Twilight Imperium is an Ameritrash game through and through. If you expect a euro, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a game like this though, this is the best.

Excellent Gaming
Twilight Imperium was one of my first forays into more complex board games. The game itself is very well built and works well to encourage player interaction. The game shows the usual standards of excellent quality one expects from Fantasy Flight games.

The board tile system leads to intersting scenarios and the plastic pieces for the game are great. The various pieces that come as token are sturdy and durable with player wear and tear in mind. Overall the game is worth giving a shot if you want to sink you teeth into a bit of grand strategy with a scifi setting.

A great game with a not so great play time
Fantasy Flight is known for making big, long, confusing board games (also wasting tons of card board with punch outs). Twilight Imperium is big, it takes a long time to play, and it can be confusing to new comers. However, it is one of the best games I have ever played. The details on all of the pieces, miniatures, and cards are fantastic. The game play is like a weird amalgamation of Diplomacy, Risk, Settlers of Catan, and Star Wars. If you have the and enough people to play, I highly recommend this game.

Awesome long game
I was trying to give this four stars in something, but just ended up giving it five in all categories. The only problem is that this game takes all day and a while to set up. that being said, I do not get bored during the 8-10 hour experience. This game is a lot of fun and a big commitment.

Greatest Board Game of All Time
Twilight Imperium is not for the faint of heart. This game takes some serious homework just to learn the basics and several play sessions to grasp the intricacies of the myriad races and varying strategies. It is ABSOLUTELY worth putting the time in, and is one of the most balanced games in terms of how you win the game.

There is an economic, military, and political component to each player's choices, allowing for multiple paths to victory. Make sure you have a solid play group and set aside a whole day for this one. Start with the base games, get the hang of it, and then add the expansions for more races, more planets/systems, and more all around good times.

Great Game but needs the Expansion
This game has an amazing depth of strategy to it which makes it very playable. However due to the imbalance of the strategy cards (one of which just gives you victory points which are other wise hard to get) I would make sure to either print off the updated ones or just buy the expansions.

The game takes a full afternoon and will always take longer the first time you play it but gets better the more you play.

Awesome
Twilight Imperium is one of the best strategy games i have ever played. The amount of time and effort put into making the game is amazing. The materials and art work alone are worth $90. Learning all of the rules is not an easy task but it is worth it. I would suggest playing with an experienced when playing for the first couple times. Game play is 1-2 hours per player depending on your experience. The more you play the quicker the game will go. Make sure you set aside an entire night when playing!

Love this game
One of my all-time favorites, just wish it wasn't such a time commitment. These days it's hard to get a 4+ hour game on the table and done with all the responsibilities we have now that we didn't have when we were teenagers and college students.
But more about the game, nothing else I've played even comes close. Wish I could play it twice a month.

Amazing
This game is amazing, though it is not for the average bored gamer. It should be played with a committed group of people and even with people that know how to play a game can take upwards of 4+ hours. Think of it as a combination of Risk, Monopoly, and Settlers; all rolled into one and on steroids. But that let that scare you away it is an amazing game and a lot of time and attention went into the rules and the verbiage on cards are very clear. I recommend this game to any one that is a hard core board gamer and/or someone that has a solid gaming group.

Best board game I've played, but also LOOONG
My favorite board game in my collection (I highly recommend eventually getting both expansions, though it is fully playable out of the box) and I've played more than a few boardgames ranging from Settlers to Agricola to Axis and Allies. This is an absolute beast of a game in terms of time and people, you're going to need to cross out a whole day for this and get 4 or 5 of your friends to join you, but if you're up for it this game will reward you with tight gameplay, immersive politics and the absolute best in 4X space opera.

Bottom line: If you're willing to spend a whole day playing one game and so are 4-5 of your friends, this will be the crowning glory of your collection. Not for the faint of heart.
