Munchkin

When I first started getting into board gaming Munchkin was the second game I picked up, my friends and I played it like crazy, and then something weird happened, I played a good card game. Munchkin is a fine game when you don't really know how to play it, the problem arises when you actually start to munchkin the game. Underneath it all Munchkin is a cut-throat negotiation game built around two decks of cards and min/maxing and when players start to understand that, a 30-90 minute game can quickly escalate into a 1-3 hour game, it turns into a slog that just is no fun. I suggest it to new players pretty regularly but I wouldn't keep it for long, it's a really good way to end friendships for weeks at a time.
