Battle with your brothers through the streets of New York City to defend your town from Shredder and the Foot Clan. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past is a scenario-driven adventure game by the designer of Descent, Kevin Wilson.
Play as one of the four Ninja Turtles, or take on the role of Shredder, and command an entire ninja army. - Game is pricey, but the mechanics are strong and the components are beautiful. If you're a TMNT fan it's a strong buy, if you're not, I'd recommend it.
First off, this game is HUGE. Prepare to clear some serious shelf space for this mammoth box. That being said, the game mechanics are designed by Arkham Horror designer Kevin Wilson and it shows. He really wrapped his read around a great adventure game that really melds the IP of TMNT. The way the gameplay incorporates teamwork makes you feel like you're a team. Combat is fast and exciting and really basic once you understand how everything works. You'll need some time to explain it to newbies, but after a few turns things should click into place.
As far as the components, they're beautiful. Wonderful comic art graces all of the scenario books and character cards and the miniatures are much larger than I was expecting.
The game is on the pricier side, but the amount of content packed into "The Works" version is worth it in my mind. There's 7 different scenarios, 7 different hero characters (11 if you count the two variations of each Turtle), and 8 different double-sided map tiles. That's more than enough to keep you occupied for hours and then start making your own variations and missions.
Overall, if you're a TMNT fan this game is going to be a buy. While I'd recommend "The Works" version for all the additional content, the regular will get you where you need to go. If you're not a TMNT fan, but enjoy dice-chucking adventure games, 1 vs. all games, or miniature games I'd give this a thorough examination because you'll probably find something to love.
