"To Bean Or Not To Bean!"

Bean farming was never so much fun! In Bohnanza, you have two or three bean fields and a handful of bean cards to plant in those fields. When you sell beans, you earn more for growing more of one variety than a few several. Thus, you want to plant as many of your favorites as you can. But you must plant the beans in your hand in the order you got them. To get rid of the beans you don't want to plant, you trade them to other players for those you want. With clever trading, you get the cars you want without helping the other players too much. In the end, the player who warns the most gold is the winner!

This already expanded game has 11 bean varieties: enough for 7 players, but it also has rules for as few as two.

Not everyone can be a successful bean farmer!

154 Bean Cards
7 3rd Bean Field Cards

Not Worth a Hill of Beans
I will start by saying I am the only person I know who has played Bohnanza and not gone bananas over it. I just do not find the hand management aspect or trading in it very fun. At the 30 minute mark when everyone is digging in and getting all excited and tense my eyes glaze over and I think about what can I play next?

I will say I know i am in the minority and from what I can tell most people enjoy this one. Just not me. And the worst part, I am not sure why. I enjoy the trading nature in Settlers of Catan, but here it just draws flat. As do all aspects of the game - for me.

Keeper
This is my wife's favorite game and I like it a lot as well. I normally go for more action-oriented games but when I take a break from those this is the one that comes out. We've had this for three years now and still bring it out because it's so unique, and satisfies that itch for a "fun, quick, easy-but-not-too easy decision making" game. We mostly play the two player variation where you don't trade and aren't forced to plant all the beans that come out in front of you, and we have a lot of fun with that. Playing with three or more players is also really fun due to the trading aspect, which is sort of comparable to trading in Settlers of Catan: "Do I trade for that card I really want or would it be helping the other player too much?". If you're on the fence about getting this I would say absolutely go for it. It's worth the $12 to $20 easily.

A quick playing classic
This I'd one of those changes that seems to simple to work. "What's this game?"
"Oh, you sell beans. It's great!"
"...really?"

Bohnanza snuck up on me and my wife. Now I'm using it as a filet game to try and make my very ameritrash group more comfortable with mathy games. The more you okay, the meaner this game gets, but it makes you want to come back for more.

Please Disregard the Lame Theme: A Wonderful Game
Bohnanza is a excellent trading and hand management game because, as my friend put it, "it's always your turn, even on other people's turns."

The goal is to collect the most gold by the end of the game by harvesting beans. Certain bean are worth more than others, but are more rare...and you only have two fields (and each field holds only one type of bean at a time). Getting more beans of one kind becomes more lucrative, but you must draw new cards and plant them...unless you can trade the ones that don't match your fields away.

And this is the heart of the game: the trading.

The game can occasionally bog down if you have a player who wants to over-analyze each trade (there are lots of trades)...but this happens rarely. This is the kind of game you could play with your family for the rest of your life.

Perfect for Families
There's enough luck and open trading for beginners to enjoy, and enough strategy to keep more experienced gamers involved. The perfect crossover to bring in new players. The 2 player variant is very fun, although different.

Fun game for all ages
Bohnanza is a fun and fast game that can be played with all ages and gaming abilities. You earn coins by planting and harvesting beans, but you only have so many bean fields, and unless you can trade away the unwanted beans in your hand when it comes to your turn, you might have to dig up your more valuable beans before they were ready to be harvested. I like that you have to play the cards in your hand in the order you picked them up, it's a simple restriction that adds a lot of strategy to a game played solely with cards. I prefer playing in a larger group (one of the benefits of bohnanza is that you can play with a larger group), but it can also be fun with 2-4 people. The different bean cards are clever and well illustrated. This is a fun game to have to be able to play with beginners and younger gamers.
