The Armenian Kingdom was established by Ashot I of Bagratuni in early 880 after successfully earning independence from Arab Abbasid Caliphate rule. Greater Armenia was often in conflict between the Arab Caliphates and the Byzantine Empires, requiring the Kings of Armenia to carefully use fortifications and diplomacy to keep balance between the larger powers.

Armenia is rich in iron, leading to some of the best armored troops in medieval Europe. The Armenia heavy cavalry, known as Ayruzdi, were said to be the strongest cavalry force of the time.
