As the Second World War progressed, Germany developed heavier and more lethal tanks with which to halt the Allied invasions of France, Italy, and ultimately, Germany. Faced with such deadly adversaries as the Panther, Tiger I and their like, the British Army found a simple but highly effective solution. By mounting the superb 17-pdr anti-tank gun onto the mainstay of the Allied armoured forces, the Sherman medium tank, they created what became known as the Firefly.

Issued at the ratio of one Firefly to two or three regular tanks in troops of either Shermans or Cromwells, the German "big cats" would no longer rule the battlefield with impunity...
