When Napoleon Bonaparte, the "Corsican Tyrant", sprung free of his exile on the island of Elba, Europe trembled. A nervous coalition of countries formed massed armies to oppose the French columns, and The Duke of Wellington was placed in command of a multinational army made up of British, German, and Dutch troops hurriedly assembled and positioned in Belgium.

Wellington's army may have been hastily mobilized and brigaded with unfamiliar units side-by-side, but on the 18th of June 1815 his men fought together and were pressed severely until the timely Prussian arrival in late afternoon. With the arrival of Blücher's Prussians, and the retreat of the Imperial Guard, the allied army surged forward to push the French off their starting positions and the day was won.
