At the Battle of Balaklava, the British Heavy Brigade was commanded by General Sir James York Scarlett, and composed of two squadrons each of the 1st Dragoons (The Royals), the 2nd Dragoons (Scots Greys), the 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish), the 5th Dragoon Guards (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) and the 6th Dragoons (Inniskilling).
The Heavy Brigade's charge against a much larger Russian cavalry force, already in retreat, was enough to put it in disorder and rout it, saving the British supply base from potential disaster.
