Battlefront Miniatures
15mm (1:100 scale)
The British Cavalry in France expanded rapidly from five brigades of regulars in the BEF at the outbreak of the war to two corps by the start of 1915 numbering 45 regiments (20,000 men).
Throughout 1916 and 1917 the cavalry were reserved for exploitation roles, but usually never committed due to the larger goals of the offensive plans not coming to fruition. This was also hindered by the cavalry being under army or corps command where the situation on the ground could not be easily judged for their commitment. However, throughout the war the cavalry was seen as a highly mobile force waiting for the opportunity to use its specialist capabilities in mobile warfare.
By 1918, Haig's Command still felt that a powerful force of cavalry was an important part of British offensive policy for use in exploitation operations. However, in 1917 the War Office insisted that a proportion be dismounted and used in other roles, reducing the number of divisions available on the Western Front in 1918 from five to three in the Cavalry Corps.
