Before their oaths, the Night's Watch Conscripts are exactly that: troops forced into fighting. Whether criminals, disgraced nobles, or simply men seeking refuge at the north edge of the world, the Conscripts are a ragged bunch, often with almost no training, and certainly no idea of the horrors awaiting them beyond the Wall. Yet, in times of great need, even an unruly mob armed with basic armor and short blades can prove problematic for an enemy to overcome, especially in great numbers. That said, no Night Watch's commander relies on their Conscripts to hold the line. They're fodder at best.
