Sail and fight with USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides", the most famous of the six heavy frigates representing the birth of the US Navy!

The US Congress authorized the original six frigates of the US Navy with the Naval Act of 1794, signed by President Washington. These ships were built during the formative years of the US Navy - on the recommendation of designer Joshua Humphreys - to create a fleet of frigates powerful enough to engage any frigates of the French or British navies, yet fast enough to evade any ship of the line.

USS Constitution, the most famous among them, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the US Navy. Launched in 1797, Constitution was built to provide protection for American merchant from French ships and to defeat the Barbary pirates. Constitution is most famous for her actions during the War of 1812 against Great Britain, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships. Retired from active service in 1881, Constitution served as a receiving ship until designated a museum ship in 1907.

The ship base, ship card and ship log are printed on two sides - the game data of a second version of the "USS Constitution 1797 (1798)" is printed on the back, allowing the players to decide the most historically appropriate version for a scenario. This special pack also includes Crew Cards and Captain Cards for William Bainbridge and Charles Stewart, two of the most famous commanders of the ship, to represent their specific and unique skills.

Old ironsides

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Very exciting addition to the American fleet. A ship that can hold her own against many of the others out there, and she comes with upgrades as well.

An awesome addition to Sails of Glory

An impressive ship that's great to see in this game. Its a beautiful mini that's as long as a French 74 and with sails similar to a British 74...a big ship! The comparisons don't stop there. In terms of game play, the ship appears to handle and absorb punishment about like a British 74, but with weaker gunnery stats. The 1812 version could give some British 74s a run for their money, though gunnery and crew stats seem to fall off a little faster as the ship takes damage. Versus a French-built 74, the Constitution would be outgunned, but all and all, a very respectable ship to for the fledgling US Navy to face off against some of the middle-weights already in the game. The additional Captain and Crew Cards are a nice feature as well. If I have anything negative to say, I wish Ares had elected to give us data for a second ship in the class (presumably USS United States in this case) like they did in other sets. It would add a lot to game play...and encourage me to buy a second one! Hopefully we will eventually see more ships in this class, including some foreign ships either captured (HMS President) or built to similar design. A very cool ship.
