The Phonix D.I was a single-seat biplane fighter with a stout and compact design, used by both branches of Austro-Hungarian air service. It was a fast airplane, well-armed and offering good vision, but it was quite difficult to maneuver and had a poor climb rate. Employed first as an escort fighter and fighter, in spite of structural weaknesses, it was favorably received by many pilots, who found it stable, robust, and easy to fly. The D.I was also used effectively as a photo-reconnaissance aircraft.
Scoring his last three victories against Macchi seaplanes, Friedrich Lang became one of only two naval aces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Designed to be used with the popular air combat game system created by Andrea Angiolino and Pier Giorgio Paglia, each WW1 Wings of Glory Airplane Pack is a ready-to-play model, painted and assembled, 100% compatible with any other WW1 Wings of Glory game product. In each pack you will find all you need to play with the airplane: a special base with gaming stats, a variable altitude flying stand, and a specific deck of maneuver cards.

This is not a very well-known aircraft, as it is Austro-Hungarian rather than German, and no one ever seems to remember or care that anyone else fought in WW1 other than Germany, Britain and France. Models like this allow WoG to expand its focus to other fronts, such as the Italian front, where most of these planes flew. Since Ares Games is an Italian company, I would expect them to put some form of emphasis on the Italian theater, and I am glad they did. It is a beautiful model and a good addition to the game.
