Icewind Dale Rime of the Frostmaiden #20 Wolf (U)

This is one of the better looking wolf miniatures out there, I think, and I'm very pleased with it.

This model doesn't click with me as well as the other wolf models I have. The sculpt is good, one seam line along the belly, out of sight, and another even more subtle hidden on the cheeks behind the muzzle. Pose is combat ready, but not too dynamic for my taste (I prefer more neutral poses). His mouth is JUST open enough to see through, and notice teeny tiny fangs. The paint job is decently good, with no smudges or running. The palette is not great. They tried to make it look like a wolf with brown fur with white tips or something to that effect, and just made it messy. They could have just used one color on the detailing belly/legs/spine and I think it would have worked better with the other color serving as a base. The eyes are perfect, however. They are blue with distinct pupils, very well done. Next to the Harbinger and Monster Menagerie models I have, he seems bulkier than a standard wolf, more of a 3.5 worg. May just be him floofing his hackles, maybe.

I needed a good amount of wolves for an upcoming session, and my FLGS didn't carry the unpainted versions. To save some time, I bought a handful of these since I was ordering anyway! They are a great size, and the pose is nice and menacing (though admittedly a bit static). The only gripe I have is that the WizKids paint jobs weren't fantastic around this time so some of the detail gets lost in the sculpts of these. Either way, they're more than table ready for me and will see lots of use.

I held off on buying the other types of wolves found in other sites and the paintable ones, and boy am I glad I did. I was so happy to get 4 of these guys in my box set. These wolves are fantastic in detail and they definitely pop on the table. Highly recommend.
