When in a Hole... Keep Digging!

Small World: Underground is a stand-alone game set beneath the surface of the same fun, light-hearted Small World universe of epic conquests and fallen empires. Featuring new Races and Special Powers, it also introduces a new twist to the original game play - Monster-occupied regions that protect Relics and Places of great power! While more daunting to conquer, these bestow even greater powers to their owner.

Small World Underground can be played on its own or combined with other Small World game elements, as many of the Races and Special Powers from the original game and previous expansions are compatible. Recommended for experienced Small World players.

21 New Special Power badges
9 Popular Places

Great game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

One of the better board games I have played. I like how there's so many combinations with class and skills that it's hard to always get same thing. Makes the game more fun and unique, rather than same thing over and over. Game play at first was hard, but once you got it down, it is fun stuff. Great strategy game for the price

Quick, Charming, and the perfect comination of Simple and Complex.

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Small World is a fantastic strategy game. It is designed to be played over a set number of rounds, so you won't find yourself in the classic strategy game deadlock where the game lasts for several days. It comes with several different play mats to compensate for adding extra players, and this helps the game scale and balance. The more players, the larger the play area. Small World has a few things that make it so Charming. Its reasonable play time is one of them. Its simplicity is another. Most people feel confident in the game after a single play through (if they don't feel confident after a round or two). The rules are easy, and my friends who normally shy away from strategy games found it to be fun and enjoyable. My personal favorite aspect of the game is that its got so much replayablity. At the start of the game, two decks are shuffled. One contains all the races in the game. These fantasy races each have a built in special ability. The second deck is a powers deck. This contains various additional special abilities. When you select a race, you also get a special power to give them a 2nd special ability. Since the decks are separate and random, you end up with a different combination of races/powers every game. This makes some really interest combinations that adds a lot of fun and challenge to the game. The draw back to the game is that unless you're experienced with the game, knowing the rules for each race and power will often require using a cheat sheet that explains what they do. This level of complexity can be the most difficult aspect of the game. Since the races and powers change every time you play, it will likely take a few games before you can play without needing to check the cheat sheet every so often. Even as an experienced player I find myself needing to reference it occasionally. This is typically only a draw back if you're trying to teach a large number of first time players, and it can bog down the earlier games a bit when everyone is trying to read the rules on what certain race/power combinations do before selecting which one they want to play. Small World Underground offers even more than the original Small World game, and i greatly prefer it to the original. It has new maps, new races, new powers, and expands upon the old game by adding magic items and magic locations. These Items and Locations can greatly impact the game, and I like the level of tactical decision making they add to the game. No longer is it just about murdering your opponents race and defending your own. Now you have to decide if certain locations are worth protecting or sacrificing, or if an item is best protected at a cost to your own units. These items and locations are also randomized each game, meaning every time you play, its a new game! I can't recommend Small World enough, and Small World Underground takes everything that was great about the basic game and makes it even better. It's a stand alone product, and you don't need anything else outside of this box to play.
