Everything I want in a board game: a massive, complex, almost sandbox experience. Very akin to traditional hex and counter games, but euro-fied for the mainstream market. I would have rather picked up the deluxe edition, as the player mats in the standard addition are thin and prone to curling, and they also don’t have the indents for all of the player pieces so things tend to slide around. The major impediment to play is the highly technical rulebook that has complex and critical information spread all throughout in a very segmented way, so it can sometimes be a frustrating hunt in trying to find *all* of the information pertaining to a specific rule or process, *especially* all of the special rules and interactions pertaining to the HRE. I will say a HUGE thank you to Aegir for including an index, which needs to be an industry standard for any medium-heavy+ rules (looking at you, Mindclash). If you are a fan of GMT games or aren’t afraid of a huge rules set and very long playtime, I would absolutely recommend EU: PoP. Also to note that it is extremely suitable for solo play or a mixture of human and bot players.
