Forbidden Fortress Review

It is the mid-1560s in Feudal Japan and the entire country has been engulfed in a brutal civil war for over 100 years. While the countless Samurai Clans battle one another for dominance, a blazing meteor streaks through the sky - the "Sword of Heaven"! Crashing into the Sacred Mountain, a cataclysmic explosion showers the countryside with a glowing, black rock - Dark Stone. Collected up by the nearby Clans and greedily hoarded into their fortresses, the Dark Stone has magical properties as it is forged into weapons and armor, giving any who wield it an edge in battle. But the power of the black rock could not be contained! Portals to other worlds rip open whenever the Dark Stone is concentrated, unleashing creatures of myth and legend to spread across the land! While most flee in terror, some heroic individuals step forward with honor, fighting to hold back the Darkness!

Forbidden Fortress is a fast-paced, dungeon-crawl boardgame set in Feudal Japan, and mixed with Unspeakable Horror! Each player creates a character, taking on the role of a classic Japanese Hero Archetype, such as a Samurai Warrior, ninja Assassin, Traveling Monk, or even a mystical Sorceress. Forming a party of Heroes, the players explore a dynamically generated fortress, overcoming dangerous encounters and fighting savage creatures, while collecting Gear and Artifacts to help them on their adventures. Heroes can even find portals to other worlds, stepping through to continue their adventure on the other side.

A campaign system allows Heroes to be kept from game to game, earning experience and going up in levels to increase their skills and gain new abilities. The Heroes can also visit local Feudal Villages between adventures, spending their hard-earned loot and re-supplying for the next mission. So draw your swords, strap on your Samurai Armor, and gather the party. The Darkness is coming and the gates of hell are about to break...

Fantastic Fun

Forbidden Fortress is a great addition to the Shadows of Brimstone line. Set in feudal Japan, it has wonderful miniatures and great gameplay. A must buy.

Awesome game

This core set is such an improvement over the original 2 western core sets. The enemies are much more varied and interesting. The heros are a big step up as well. I really enjoy the ancient Japanese theme. It is so much fun to fight enemies, level up your character, and find new gear. An all around great dungeon crawler.

Amazing core set

The characters in this are super fun and the monsters incredible. Had a great time painting them and everything is such quality. Best board game I’ve ever played.

Pretty damn good

Once you get everything thing together and on the table you won’t be disappointed, building the models wasn’t hard, tho I been building models for over 35 years the game wasn’t hard to learn but after a few plays you can pretty much get the flow down rather quickly.

A game to live inside... =)

The game is awesome. Very addictive. Beware: if you buy a core set, you will want to add everything else later.

Not forbidden in my house

Best price anywhere for this! Great additions to the heroes vs the western themed core sets. Integrates perfectly with the others to allow my kid to be a ninja and me a gunslinger. Highly recommend.

Great game, a lot to learn

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I have played this once, this is my first Brimstone game. I do like it. I feel the more I play it, the more ironed out with the rules I will get. The rules aren't bad, but there can be a lot of things to remember and read to make sure you are getting everything. Fantasy Flight Games really spoils us with the way their instructions and references that they give. Flying Frog could organize their instructions better, sometimes I find things hard to look up. The models are awesome, but I feel they could have used maybe 1 more set of enemies of some kind, or make the ooze the plastic models instead of the tokens. As for everything else, there is a lot to the game. It is fun, but there is so much going on at times. There is a lot of rolling. And unfortunately the dice gods were against my girlfriend and I. We did not win the scenario, but we had fun. If you like Shadow of Brimstone games I was told you would like it. I do love the Samurai theme to it. I can't wait until more enemy packs and expansions come out for it.
