The 105mm howitzer provided heavier indirect support that was close enough to the front to respond quickly to Japanese counter-attacks. The ability to lay down a smoke bombardment meant that the Marine infantry could advance under cover of smoke. The 105mm HE round was also very effective when used in a direct fire role.
