The task set for 26. Volksgrenadierdivision for the Ardennes offensive was tough. They had to cross the Our River, fight their way up its steep western bank, and break through the US lines around Bastogne. In their path lay hundreds of felled trees, copious barbed wire entanglements and large areas of mines, all left behind by retreating German troops earlier in the year. They had to penetrate all of these obstacles and punch through the American lines, thus clearing the way for 2. Panzerdivision and Panzer Lehr Division to push through towards their objectives further behind the American lines.
