IKI is set during the Edo-period in Japan (1603-1868). Edo was the name of Tokyo during that period. In the Nihonbashi are was located the most animated market of the city.
Along the main street of Nihonbashi, many storekeepers of various activities installed their shops and invited customers to do business. Close to the main street, living in houses called Nagayas, craftsmen and merchants with various skills helped support the common people of Edo: lantern makers, woodblock printers, street merchants, tempura sellers, geishas...
Live an entire year in Edo and try to become the best Edokko, the "child of Edo", by watching over the well-being and the prosperity of Edo and its citizens. Hire characters with various skills, make them work in the main street of Nihonbashi. The winner is the Edokko with the most IKI, a philosophical concept of the Edo period representing the ideal way of living a civic life.

Good, tight game.
My wife and I enjoyed our first play of this beautifully presented mid weight rondelle. Fairly easy to learn the turn sequence. It looks like there are many paths to winning. But the game is tight enough that you don't have much room to change tactics throughout the game. We both think it's good. Maybe not great but good for sure 8/10

Beautiful Game, Good Theme, A Little Heavy
It's a beautiful game that let's you pretend you're shopping around markets in Edo-period Japan. The game's theme is beautiful but in reality you're just moving your meeple around in circles.- walking. So that's not very exciting, but being able to collect different items/resources is fun, if you're used to those kind of games. Trying to get to a particular shop before other places is fun too, and worrying about the fire is fun too. But the game could feel like a long point salad game in my opinion. Once. you retire your shop workers, that's when things speed up and you start seeing the fruits of your labor.

Feels Classic!
This is a great, thinky mid-weight style board game. Interesting mechanics with a unique and historical theme. The rule book was challenging for me - possibly just me, and my learning style, but i had to read it a couple times. But gameplay is quite simple!
