War has been a constant throughout the history of mankind. From the first civilisations of Babylon and Egypt to the classical eras of Greece and Rome, and beyond to the medieval wars between England and France, ancient civilisations have massed thousands of soldiers to march against their enemies to clash for dominance and conquest. On the battlefields of history, only the sinew of men and the cunning of generals will prove victorious.

With Hail Caesar, you can raise an army of ancient warriors and take them into battle against your friends, recreating some of the most famous and legendary battles ever fought.

Hail Caesar is a set of massed-battle wargame rules that allow you to recreate any number of battles from throughout ancient history, including all the rules necessary for open conflict and siege assaults. This 236-page hardback book written by renowned games designer, Rick Priestley updates the Hail Caesar game with amended rules and all new features such as rules for sieges and the extension of the timeline to include such conflicts as the Hundred Years War and the War of the Roses.

Hail Ceaser - with War of the Roses and Hundred Years War

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

The update to the original Hail Caesar is definitely worth picking up (especially this cheap) if you have any interest in gaming ancients and now with the expanded Medieval period this is the book to purchase. The inclusion of this late Middle Ages period allows gamers to benefit from no longer having a gap between the origina Hail Caesar and Black Powder (if one is interested in the 1600s onwards, the later book is also in the second edition). The art work is gorgeous and a combination of Warlord and Perry Brothers figs (with a few others scattered about). If you like a big battle game, prefer to remove whole units only (casualties are not pulled individually or even by bases, ONLY the whole unit) and prefer dice driven (rather than card based) rules, but do not want to have to learn new mechanics/rules for each period, then give this a try. Some of the updates such as examples of basing on page 67 are really welcome as the original edition was not as clear. Highly recommended!

Beautiful Rule Book

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I primarily ordered the new edition of Hail Caesar because I looked it over at my LGS, and decided it looked more organized than the previous edition. It does not disappoint. The rules are easy to understand, and have a few changes. I definitely recommend Hail Caesar 2E!
