During the reign of Emperor Yao, the people of ancient China were constantly plagued by deadly floods along the Yellow River. Eager to put an end to the devastation, Yao selected Gun, one of his officials, to devise a plan. After nine years of failed attempts using dams and dikes, Gun's employment came to a questionable end. After his passing, Yu inherited his father's work. Learning from Gun's failures, Yu set out to construct a series of canals to direct the surging river into nearby fields and smaller waterways.

Legacy of Yu is a solo-only, fully-resettable, nonlinear campaign game in which you step into the role of the legendary hero of the Xia Dynasty, Yu the Great. It will be your job to build the canals ahead of the impending flood, while also defending your growing village against neighboring barbarian tribes. With each game, stories will be shared and new gameplay elements added. The campaign features a self-balancing system which adapts to how well you are doing. The campaign ends once you either win or lose seven games.

Great solo game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Very fun and challenging solo game. Quick setup and tear down, and I have yet to play just a single game in a session.

Perfect solo design

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

A great box insert and small board are easy to underrate. This game can be set up in no time and takes up half the space of my other solo games. Only complaint is that it's a bit too easy for my taste. But if you look up the Champion Promo on BGG, the image has options for increasing the difficulty. They make it much tighter and let some of the mechanics shine.

A winding journey

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I've played three games in the campaign so far. The resource management puzzle is enjoyable, and the way the campaign tweaks the difficulty based on your wins and losses is a novel system. The storybook entries you reveal as you play through the campaign are kind of forgettable, but every time you trigger one it also adds a new element to the game, potentially permanently adding new foes, allies, or challenges. As with many campaign games, you definitely want to play games back to back or daily whenever possible. There isn't any reference to special rules outside the storybook, nor are there storybook reference notes on the story cards, so if you forget how something works, you may end up hunting through old storybook entries for the rules.
