Viceroy: Times of Darkness supplies your pyramid of power with fastidious aristocrats and shady underworld figures. You will earn precious diamonds and fend off invading monsters.

This box contains three expansion modules as well as revised law cards for the base game and new game modes for both one- and two-player variants.

Aristocrats - Twelve aristocrat cards are shuffled to the character deck. The cost for the first level is any two gemstones. No reward on the first level - they prefer to fly high. Special bonus instead of colored sections.

Invasion - At the end of the 3rd, 7th, and 11th turns, a horde of monsters attacks each player. The more monsters a player defeats, the better reward they may choose. To repel the invasion, a player needs to defeat at least one of the monsters by paying the cost. If a player fails to stop the invasion, they lose power points.

Underworld - A separate deck of criminal cards reflects the players' ties with the underworld. A player pays for criminal cards by gaining judgement tokens with different penalties. Criminal cards are played below the first level of the pyramid. They feature unique rewards such as bribe tokens or relocation of character cards.

An excellent expansion for what I thought of as a nearly prefect game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I loved Viceroy enough to kickstart it when they translated it to English. This expansion is very well thought out, adds several modules you can pick and choose from and overall improves an already great game in a way that doesn't feel like gilding the lily. These days, expansions can sometimes just add to the time it takes to play a game, without adding anything engaging to the game, but this expansion exceeds my expectations on value in an expansion. I would honestly say, if you're buying the base game, just go ahead and get the expansion so you have the modules when you're ready to spice things up a bit.
