Port Royal: Big Box Edition

So nice to have the base game and all the expansions in one box with new art. The only con is that the insert doesn't hold all the cards if they are sleeved.

I picked up the Port Royal Big Box on a bit of a whim. The creator, Alexander Pfister, is known for such high strategy/complexity Euro games such as Maracaibo, the Great Western Trail series, Mombasa/Skyview, among others. A push your luck marketplace card game like Port Royal seemed like a bit of departure from his usual style, but I was intrigued by the depth of strategy offered in it through purchasing different crew to build your card economy to enable acquisition of end game victory points. The game is also very easy to teach to people who aren't experienced strategy boardgamers. I taught it to my parents and they picked up on it quicker than they did a game such as Wingspan. Highly recommend this one for experienced and brand new board game players.

Port Royal is a fantastic game and this 'big box' (which is roughly the size of the standard Carcassonne box) packs in all the expansions.

I love this game, but honestly, the art upgrade is the only reason to buy this one. The expansions don't really add to the game. I like it better without them.

Bought it just to play the base game, but there are three other game modes to add along with the base game that comes with it. The cards are marked as well for the different game modes, so you won't get them mixed up. Easy to learn and really fun to play.

Art work is improved and now I have alternative stuff to try. It’s a Great game and good quality.

Every bank gets to play each turn if you want to earn your money. So you get to interact each play.

This is a fun game but so far I have only played solo and the cutlass strategy seems too powerful. I have played the solo version of Just One More Contract and also the first Chapter of The Adventure Begins and was able to win both easily stocking up on cutlasses. Perhaps it works better competitively and coop than it does solo. I do really love the artwork and some of the cards in Chapter 1 of the campaign are unique from card to card which is great. For the price this game is a pretty great deal.

I bought the original US version of Port Royal and loved it. Then I found there was an expansion only available in Germany (bi-lingual) but it wasn't compatible with my version of the game. So I imported the original European game and the expansion. Loved it. Then I found there was a second expansion, but it wasn't bi-lingual. Just in German. So, I was saddened. Then Pegasus Spiel released this new edition. Every single card ever printed for the game. Promos I didn't know existed. All the expansions. Rules all in one place. A quick-start summary. Gorgeous new artwork. And for less than I spent on the original game. So much in one box. I'd love to see more top-quality re-releases of classic games like this. An absolute must-have for fans of the game. And if you haven't tried it but like push-your-luck games, I highly recommend this.
