Hadrian's Wall Rules School
Hadrian's Wall @ 48:38

When visiting the North of Britannia in 122 AD, the Roman Emperor Hadrian Augustus witnessed the aftermath of war between his armies and the savage Picts. In a show of Roman might, he ordered a wall to be built that would separate the Pict tribes from the rest of England. Grand in its design, the wall stretched 80 Roman miles, from coast to coast.

In Hadrian's Wall, players take on the role of a Roman General, placed in charge of constructing a milecastle and bordering wall. Over 6 years (rounds), players will construct their fort and wall, man the defenses, and attract civilians by building services and providing entertainment - all while defending the honor of the Roman Empire from the waring Picts. The player that can accumulate the most Renown, Piety, Valour, and Discipline, whilst avoiding Disdain, will prove to the Emperor they are the model Roman citizen and be crowned Legatus Legionis!

Surprisingly good

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I was concerned because I am not a fan of beat your own score solo games (ok not truly a solo but milieu player solitaire) but I found Hadrians Wall to be an engaging, crunchy euro type experience. I was also concerned about learning the game. The rule book could be better. However, once you grasp the basics of the iconography, perhaps watch a how to play video briefly, it isn’t hard to learn. Highly enjoyable with much replayability.

Great roll n write

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

you have a lot going on and it is overwhelming at first but then you get it. Really like this and probably my favorite fill n the blanks game.

A lot to take in, but incredibly worth it

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

When I first lifted the box of Hadrian's Wall, I was marveling at how such a small box could be so heavy. When I opened it up I realized most of the weight was from the pads which represent two of the player boards, I'll never be able to play through all these sheets, I am excited about that. I mostly got this to play solo, which this game shines with one, but also can be fun as a multiplayer solitaire game with a little player interaction. The combos you can uncover are the greatest part of playing this game, going through and choosing when to send which workers or resources where to streamline your massive wall engine. If you like card draw and write resource allocation engine builder games that shine in solo play, this is your jam.

Intimidating at first but...

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Most flip and fills I've played are lightweight filler games. Not this game. When you first look at the sheets for Hadrian's Wall you realize you're in for a very different experience, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't intimidating at first. If you get past the initial moment of hesitation, you are in for a treat. Every action you take usually leads to another action, or gives you a new resource that you can use to extend your turn. Discovering these combinations is just so fun. With new goals that pop up every round and the threat of impending invasion at the end of each turn, the game does a good job of guiding your actions just enough to ensure you don't feel overwhelmed. As the game progresses you'll have even more resources, more combos, and more fun. One warning I'll give: if you suffer from analysis paralysis when playing games, this game might take you a while.

A crunchy roll n write

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Very in depth and interconnected roll and write. Loads of tracks that intertwine, and lots of variabilities based on the cards that show up for resources every turn. Cons are that it's a lot to teach, and visually overwhelming to start.

Build the wall

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Excellent game! Not your average flip and write. It’s easy to learn but difficult to master; many difficult decisions along the way for maximizing points. Fun time!

Excellent puzzle

So much fun…this game even my teens ask to play…we’ve played it 3 times in the last day and a half.

Crunchy solo experience

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This game is a whole lot at first, and after 7 plays I still haven't done everything. This is hands down the most crunchy flip and write on the market. Once you have a few playthroughs under your belt you can finish games in well under an hour but your brain will feel like it was 2!

A Complex Roll & Write Board Game Hybrid

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Hadrian's Wall is a fantastic game that leverages the potential of the roll & write format (low setup time, low fiddliness) to streamline what would be an otherwise unwieldy game. It's one of the most multi-player solitaire experiences I've had in board gaming (I hardly looked at my opponents), but it keeps everyone engaged with non-stop combo chains. If you like roll & writes and don't mind extremely limited player interaction, this is one not to miss.

Hadrian’s Wall

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Hadrian’s Wall is an in depth flip and write game with lots of strategic opportunities. I love the puzzley aspect and also the cascading of combinations you can trigger. Although I haven’t quite mastered it yet, I look forward to many more plays of trying to figure out the best strategy to win.
