You pull your wand from the folds of your cloak, and its glowing blue end illuminates the door in front of you - the entrance to the banned books section. You watch as the copper snakes twist and turn around the lock that keeps students like you out. But you've been left with no choice. Your barn owl hoots softly upon your shoulder as you raise your wand to the knob and whisper the unspoken words.

Glad I Read It, Not Going to Run It

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

While Kids on Brooms isn't the game for me, it might be your favorite game ever. The mechanics are solid and flexible, and for a storytelling group there's incredible potential in this system. However, the approach to storytelling is much more collaborative than in most RPGs, and a lot of narrative control is ceded to players. If you have really specific ideas about how you want Legally Distinct from Hogwarts to be, it won't be because the players collaboratively design it as they see fit. While I appreciate the representation of neuroatypical and queer characters, the extensive section on what is on and off limits for the game feels overly delicate in how it handles player comfort zones. Maybe I'm just a grognard who feels patronized when told to run a note-passing ceremony to see if my players are comfortable with topics like systemic racism, sexism, and the really evil stuff we should know is off limits without talking about it first. Just talk to your players, man. Those gripes aside, this is a really great game that I firmly recommend. It's mechanically really well-suited to collaborative storytelling, games based on exploration and role-playing rather than killing stuff, and just raw creativity all around.

If you are into this sort of thing.

While not my cup of tea, I feel that it achieves success in providing fans of harry potter with an alternative to dungeon crawl, hack and slash RPG's. My wife, a harry potter fan, seemed to really enjoy this book. Mechanically it plays almost exactly like kids on bikes, which means it should prove to be quite fun for fans of this genre.
