The smash hit from Essen Game Fair 2021 is now available from Rio Grande Games!

In 1347, merchant galleys from the Crimean Peninsula arrived in Sicily and docked at the ancient port of Messina. The galleys had rats. The rats had fleas. And the fleas carried a plague that would come to be known as the Black Death. Over the next four years, in cities across Europe, half the population would die.

Players take the role of noble families with landholdings in the countryside around Messina. They attempt to rescue people from the plague by relocating them to their estates. As the plague in Messina worsens, the players will build small independent communities while attempting to control the plague with fire. In the final rounds of the game, the plague begins to abate, and players return the rescued citizens to repopulate the resilient city of Messina.

Great game! Takes about two hours to play but you can play solo which is great for anyone having a hard time finding people willing to play this game.

Plague Rats Aren't That Scary

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Worker placement and decisions about where to put the workers you receive. We have played this several times and I still think we have more to get out of it. Great at 4 players.

Wonderful Game

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

This is a wonderful game with good component quality. It's a fairly long game running close to 2 hours but you'll have a good brain buster thinking about the different actions you could do and the management of resources. Typical euro-game style. But in the end you will have fun.

Suchy does it again!

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Great euro game with tons of paths to victory that you can pursue. A little bit rules fiddly, but, can easily be overlooked because of the challenging and fulfilling experience as a whole.

Awful fun for a dark theme

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Set in the dark days of the black plague, you are a sicilian noble house working to rescue the people of the city of Messina, combat the plague, and repopulate the devastated city. Messina 1347 is a worker placement game. You send your lieutenants into the city to rescue citizens, gather resources, burn infected parts of the city, and build your estate. The game is a balancing act, trying to have enough supplies to build your estate and get the kinds and qualities of citizens you need in order to repopulate the city, while at the same time advancing along the different influence tracks. There's a ton of strategy in this game, and it will likely take quite a few plays to master.

Antoher great Suchy design!

Fantastic game! Several clever game mechanics all rely on each other, making each decision feel important, and the game feels tight where no move can be wasted.

Good Game

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

It's a good game, it's what you would expect with any worker-placement game; place a worker gain something/take an action. I like how the board is modular so it helps keep the game fresh and interesting with every play through. There are a lot of rules but the rules aren't daunting, you can get by once you've memorized them after 2 plays or so. However, the game does run quite long and for me, that's an issue as I like playing games that are 45-90 minutes. This easily crosses that limit for me.

A good euro puzzle for those who put fun over victory

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Messina is one of those games that seems harder than it is. There are several choices you could make each turn and multiple paths to accomplish what you want which could lead to AP for some players but for others it leads to wanting more chances to play and try new strategies. It plays surprisingly quickly at 2. I recommend it to anyone who likes a thinky euro puzzle to solve and doesn’t mind making sub optimal choices in favor of keeping the game moving.
