In Eight-Minute Empire, 2-5 players take turns selecting a card from six displayed. The card gives a good, and also has an action that the player takes immediately. Actions help players take over the map, but sets of goods are worth points at the end of the game, so players have to balance the two aspects.
Eight-Minute Empire is the super-quick area control game with tough decisions. It's easy to learn and perfect for when you only have a few minutes.

Fast Red Raven
It's not joking about a fast playtime! Quick to learn the rules, but still requires strategy. A good weeknight or pallette cleansing game.

Filler game, my left foot!
Eight-Minute Empire became a favorite game of mine from the first game. I backed it on Kickstarter and never looked back. Area control and resource collection blended until smooth, this game is one of my favorite gateway games. Easily taught in a few minutes and able to be set up again quickly, you will easily be able to get in enough games for even the greenest gamer to become very comfortable. The play time is only the implied eight minutes when played with quick players, but otherwise clocks in at about 15 minutes per game.

One of the First from a Great Games Company
I really enjoy this little pseudo-wargame from Red Raven Games. It's tight, fun, and feels very tactical, though, it CAN be a bit prone to Analysis Paralysis. One high mark for this game is that the two-player version uses a dummy third player that doesn't feel fiddly or intrusive. It's just a nice way to populate what would otherwise be a barren board-space. It might not be an eight-minute game, but it DOES still play quickly, and it's very easy to understand. The cards you purchase when collecting your sets double as your actions for that turn, which you use to push coloured cubes around the map. If that isn't your idea of a fun time (the pushing cubes part), then this will not be a game for you~

A quick area control game
Manage your money, maximize your purchases, and control as much area as you can. This is a great, simple game with a very concise rule book that plays fast and is a lot of fun. Above the board, there is a market of six cards to purchase. The left-most card is free and the price goes up from there (0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3). You start the game with a fixed amount of money and few armies on the board. Purchasing cards allows you to place more armies, destroy opponent armies, move armies across land and/or sea, and build cites that will become a new base to deploy armies. The cards also feature goods on them. Collecting more cards with matching goods is worth victory points at the end of the game along with the number of regions and continents you control. It's a quick game to play, in a nice small box perfect for throwing in your bag on the off chance you'll find a spare moment to play.
