Rob Looks at High Fronter 4 All

In this, the 4th edition of Phil Eklund's iconic game, the core rules have been completely updated, expanded, and richly illustrated with examples to guide you through the rules. New are also a glitch system (allowing for rational risk taking), recently discovered sites on the map, more factions, unique faction abilities, and much more. The game system has been adjusted to a modular structure, allowing you to mix and match modules to tailor your preference. This core box includes the first module, "Politics".

Soon bold entrepreneurs and public organizations will be exploring and prospecting sites throughout the solar system. Incredible new processes and techniques to space will open new opportunities for humankind. In High Frontier 4 All, you will become one of these explorers, competing in the market for "the right stuff" patents - designing and building rockets, prospecting robonauts, space refineries, and more. The key to the solar system is water, so useful as rocket propellant. So your first destinations will be the ones with the most profitable hydration. Choose wisely - the key to winning will be the factories you establish in space.

High Frontier is based on published facts, in a sandbox that includes the most detailed solar system map ever gamed, as well as a myriad of directions that space development might take, in what is said to be one of the best representations of travel in the solar system ever made in 2D.

Separate rules and components are included for two new introductory games. One gets your familiar with the map, and the other takes you step-by-step through the rules. Both are stand-alone games, great for playing a "lighter" verison of High Frontier with family and friends.

A truly stellar space simulation

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

HF4A goes beyond being a game to be a truly compelling space simulation. Winning or losing are secondary to the experience of exploring space, and to the stories that emerge from play.

This new 4th edition of this game is a redo of a classic Board Game by the original developer and a Kickstarter project of many years in the remaking.

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This is a game for people that have a real interest in the science behind space exploration principles and as such is not a light game marketed for everyone. If you have an interest in planning a mission to explore space while dealing with some of the difficulties and realities that entails either buy a copy (while still available) or join SpaceX. I followed this game's planned reissue and its earlier renditions in the hope that when it became available again that I would have the opportunity to grab one up for a close friend that has a profound interest in this applied field of science. I was able thanks to Miniature Market able to purchase the game and one of the modules, as it was already sold out everywhere else including the designer's store (where the other two modules were still available). My friend was very surprised with a gift so tailored to his interests. He loves the game!

More accessible than a war game.

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This is the one. At first it seems daunting as it is quite complex from the onset. If this is your first Phil Eklund game then you might feel overwhelmed. I thought it was rather accessible though. After you take your time going through the rules they're not as hard as I imagined at first sight. The board is beautiful to behold and the cards have cool knowledge snippets. Gameplay focuses around exploring the galaxy. As you add more modules to the core game, you can add extra things that you can do. Even with the core system there is plenty to keep track of.
