Great Addition
The game is great and the regular player mats that come in the base game work fine. But having this cool neoprene mat does add to the look and feel of the game by a lot. It's not necessary and it does mean carrying more stuff for a game that is otherwise supposed to be compact and travel-ready, but it's so nice that you wouldn't be wrong to buy it. Pieces do not move or shift easily which means you can definitely stub your toe on the table and not move any pieces across the table.
