Twilight Struggle: Red Sea - Conflict in the Horn of Africa is a two-player, stand-alone, card-driven game that builds on the award-winning Twilight Struggle.

The year is 1974, and the Soviet Union and the United States have been locked in a life-or-death struggle across the globe. As so often happened during the Cold War, a relatively obscure region of the globe suddenly took center stage. Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, a bedrock U.S. ally in Africa, had grown old and increasingly dictatorial. When he was overthrown in 1974, a Marxist coalition took the reins of power. This new revolutionary leadership initiated a chain of events that upset the regional balance of power and unleashed all the familiar elements of Cold War competition in the Horn of Africa.

Twilight Struggle in all its glory was just too much for me. But this one hits the sweet spot. Many thanks to GMT!

The perfect short version

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

My son and I played the original Twilight struggle a couple of times. It was intense and lots of decision making. It was the quintessential how do you stretch your resources and make the best of bad decisions type of game. Lots of thinking. The original took us about 6 hours to complete as we learned the rules and thought about what we could do. The ending was monumental. We enjoyed the experience so much. This new one is a shortened form of the old game. Takes less time but with all of the mechanics. Even some new ones thrown in. Still has all the flavor and intensity of the original game. It just takes less time. What a great way to introduce new players to the bigger game. I hope they continue making these smaller conflicts in regular releases. There's a lot to think about a lot of flavor for history.
