The 2017 starter has some of the best torpedoes in the game, and the Sutherland and Vorn are top tier ships winning at national and world level competitions.

New and Certainly Improved
I played the original attack wing and enjoyed it, however, I didn't have a lot of people to play with at the time and typically had to sell one hobby to move to another. My kids are now teens and my financial situation is better so I decided to give the game a try again. My oldest is really into strategy games and Risk, so I thought this would interest him. The PRO's: I feel like the factions are better balanced than before. There are a lot more useful cards then the previous version as well. It isn't too hard to setup a team and play, and with the boosted cards battles can be resolved more quickly and don't feel like a slog. I have purchased most the recent sets and all the factions have some interesting abilities that can make them competitive. Which I did not feel like was the case previously. CONS: Ship quality is still an issue. I have bought most the recent sets starter, Fed faction expansion, Klingon faction expansion, Cardassian Expansion, and Vulcan Expansion, and the Dominion campaign. My Nebula ship came in pieces and one of the ships in the Dominion Campaign box was broken. I am not a fan of the federation ship color scheme either.

Its a good set, but, a bit of a mixed bag, first the bad, the slots cut in the base plates for holding the captain portraits are to loose and the Federation vs Romulan scenario requires the purchase of additional sets beyond the the starter set (fine for standard single ship expansion packs but, not for a multi-ship expansion pack). Now for the good, the ships themselves are nicely detailed, the Klingon and Romulan captains pair well with the included ships, Mudd is great for Troll builds and the included Federation cards allow for some fun Enterprise builds (though the fact it almost defeated my brother's D'derdex in a 2v2 match it might be a bit overpowered). The Vendorian Spy may have been better served in a stand alone Romulan expansion instead of a faction pack with only 1 Romulan ship. but, all in all I would recommend it.
