Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition

Great refinement of the original game. Well worth playing, even if you have the original.

Such a good version of an epic game. This is a BETTER version of favorite of mine (and this has been my wife's favorite since we got the original). The pieces are nicer, the art on the tiles is (subjectively) nicer, the expansions are included (which is great!). There is a metric ton of play in this box. If you enjoy this style of game (civ building), it is a spectacular experience. It also helps that it seems that WizKids is getting better about their quality. It isn't PERFECT, but it is much, much better than some experiences that I've had in the past with their games (never TERRIBLE, but some were a bit disappointing in terms of consistency between base/expansions and component quality). This has very, very few issues in those terms. Highly recommended.

This edition contains everything available for Clash of Culture, in an excellent production, with updated rules. The new rules streamline a few things, clarify others, and general keep everything wonderful about the original but refine some rougher edges to near perfection. The new minis are improved, and the ship sails are now part of the model meaning they no longer fall out all the time. The miniature wonders have a nice gold finish with a soft stain so the detail comes out. The rulebook has been organized to make it easier to play the base game or with the built-in expansion. Art looks great. I've got the original game, and its hard-to-find expansion, and I still decided to bite the bullet and get this. Worth the price for me--this is easier to get to the table with the built in trays, the miniatures are easier to identify and play with, and things like the new combat dice make it easy to use the improved ruleset without having to complicate things.

Clash of Cultures is a 4X game that concentrates on the Culture aspect of empire building. The rules are simple and easy to understand and combat is challenging. One of the best aspects of the game is that a pure military strategy is not likely to win the game. If you are spending all your efforts into military and eliminate another player, it triggers the end game and scoring. It will be likely that you don't have enough culture points to win if you tried to rush the end game. You can truly feel your empire grow as your cities start with a small settlement and then you build specialized buildings around the settlements. Up to four buildings can be built in a city, and they wrap around the city center that makes for a nice table presence. Your tech tree gives a lot of leeway on how you build your empire, and you have a separate empire specific tech tree that you can unlock up to four special abilities. As you explore the area by flipping tiles, you might encounter Barbarian tribes. You can fight these and take over the settlements for your own or you can hinder your opponents by sometime having them attack them. It is an overall pleasant experience playing this game, even if you lose. You still have a feeling of accomplishment and the end of the game as you look across the map and see your sprawling cities.

Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition is truly an epic 4X civilization experience. The Monumental Edition includes the Civilizations expansion of the original Clash of Cultures and the Aztec promo. They have also streamlined and revised some of the rules, making Clash of Cultures better than ever. The variety of civilizations, events, objectives, advances and action cards is huge. Each game will feel very different and weaves its own fantastic tale. The biggest downside of the game is that there are so many little details to keep track of, that it's easy to forget to use advances and abilities you've previously invested in. Thankfully there is an advance checklist broken down by actions that you can download from BoardGameGeek.com. That helps a lot with this issue. My favorite civ game is probably still Through The Ages: A New Story of Civilization, but Clash of Cultures is definitely my favorite Civilization game with a map! Highly recommended!

My favorite game. This edition is a big improvement from the original. If you're on the fence and you're not dirt poor, get it!
