The towed 105mm L118 light gun entered service with the British Army in 1976 and is similar to the gun fitted in the Abbot self-propelled gun. It is heavier than its predecessor, the 105mm pack howitzer, but still light enough that helicopters such as the Puma and Westland Sea King can easily transport it. These field batteries were primarily deployed to support the Parachute Regiment in their operations.
