In dark forests and forlorn mountains, by black lakes and hidden groves. At your doorstep. In the shadows, something stirs. Strange beings. Twisted creatures, lurking at the edge of vision. Watching. Waiting. Unseen by most, but not by you. You see them for what they really are. Vaesen.

Welcome to the Mythic North - northern Europe of the nineteenth century, but not as we know it today. A land where the myths are real. A cold reach covered by vast forests, its few cities lonely beacons of industry and enlightenment - a new civilization dawning. But in the countryside, the old ways still hold sway. There, people know what lurks in the dark. They know to fear it.

Vaesen is written by Nils Hintze and based on the work of Swedish illustrator and author Johan Egerkrans. It presents a dark Gothic setting steeped in Nordic folklore and old myths of Scandinavia. The game mechanics use an adapted version of the award-winning Year Zero Engine.

Inside, you'll find:

• Ten ready-to-use archetypes let you create a character in minutes - or use the included life path tables and let the dice decide.

• Quick and flavorful rules for combat, investigations and horror.

• Rules for developing the player characters' mansion in campaign play.

• A detailed gazetteer of the Mythic North setting and the town of Upsala.

• A score of bloodcurdling vaesen to encounter, all beautifully illustrated by Johan Egerkrans.

• An introductory Mystery called "The Dance of Dreams"

A beautiful, well-made book

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I've been a fan of Vaesen, playing with a PDF copy, for a year or so. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the hardcover book. It's a beautiful, well-crafted book I will be proud to have on my bookshelf.

Awesome Mystery RPG!

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

The book is a fantastic product, made with high-quality materials and the artwork is one of a kind. The game system itself is the Year Zero Engine you can find in Alien RPG and Tales of the Loops. It's a simple system that only needs D6s. Success only happens if you roll a Six. The system also includes a push your luck reroll system for tests. Overall, a great book that I suggest people pick up!

A departure from the standard norm.

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

If you want to try a new setting and explore horror based on the terrors from the old north this is your game! An easy-to-use dice system and unconventional means of dealing with terrible and mystical foes make this game a departure from straightforward games like Dungeons and Dragons and etc. Defeating the troll that's been rampaging through the country side isn't as simple as finding it and shooting it. No, you need to answer the riddle it's been asking its victims or stall it till the sun comes out. And god help you if you're a christian and it smells your blood! Every foe has a series of weakness and taboos they follow. Some false. Some true. It's your job to figure it out and defeat the monster.

Unique and beautiful

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I wanted to stay in the realm of fantasy, but wanted to try something other than the usual dragons and wizards. Vaesen labels itself as Nordic Horror, but you can easily turn it into a Brothers Grimm or similar fairy-tale where it will likely not be happily ever after. Also, the lore offered in the book gives so many options for role-playing that requires investigation and planning by the player rather than just “murder hobo” or “fireball” every time. For many of the creatures, it offers rituals or actions that need to be done to banish or appease the creatures. Also, there is a Example of Conflicts section giving the Gamemasters prompts and reasons why these creatures would cross paths with the players. The artwork is fantastic and captures the feel of 1800s illustration like A. Rackham and J. Tenniel. This world of Vaesen will be a new favorite at my table alongside Call of Cthulhu and Blades in the Dark.

Gorgeous

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This is one of the most beautiful rpg books put out. The art, the design, even the cover are gorgeous. Not only that, the game is a good implementation of the Year Zero engine. It use a dice pool mechanic for pretty much everything, and is incredibly smooth. This is my new go to game for 19th century horror.
