Viscounts of the West Kingdom (Rules School)

Viscounts of the West Kingdom is set at a time when the King's reign began to decline, circa 980 AD. Choosing peace over prosperity, our once strong King began offering our enemies gold and land to lay down their axes. But peace is a tenuous affair. As poverty spread, many people lost faith in his ability to lead and sought independence from the crown. Since finding favour in his courts, our future has also become uncertain. As viscounts, we must be wise and decisive. Loyalty is to be upheld, but gaining favour among the people must be our priority, should there be a sudden shift in power.

The aim of Viscounts of the West Kingdom is to be the player with the most victory points at game's end. Points are gained by constructing buildings, writing manuscripts, working in the castle and acquiring deeds for new land. Players begin with a handful of townsfolk, but should quickly seek out more suitable talents to advance their endeavours. Each turn they will be travelling around the kingdom, looking to increase their influence among the various areas of society. The game ends once the Kingdom reaches poverty or prosperity - or potentially both!

Excellent Game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Get this game! It's an excellent game. If you like Architects of the West Kingdom, then you'll love this game. You're going to moving your pawn around the board, gaining resources to then either construct buildings onto the board, or buy new cards, or move your meeples onto the castle to gain benefits and end-game points. Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to play but it's well worth it.

Lovers of GWT and West Kingdom fans will love this

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I am a huge fan of Architects. Played this, liked it, and then realized it was so much like GWT (Rondelle, deck building). Fabulous game, so much depth with the expansions.

A Lot of Different Solo Campaigns

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I am very happy with Viscounts of the West Kingdom. I have been playing it as a solo game against the included AI scheme cards. I think the AI bot and different setup scenarios add a lot of different challenges at different difficulty levels, making each game unique. It is interesting to try to adapt your strategy with the changing board and the number of resources in hand.

Wrapping up the trilogy with a bang

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

A fine conclusion to the West Kingdom trilogy. It took a little longer to grok than Architects or Paladins, but the payoff was a bit more too. A very interesting system with some very interesting decisions.

Overall great game that mixes deck building with rondel actions

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This is a great game if you like medium to heavy weight euro style games. I really enjoy the deck building aspect of this game. The card played dictates how far you can move your player piece around the rondel and perform one of the four major actions of the game. The cards in play on the player board contain symbols that allow the player to perform the intended action. I feel like the game moves smoothly once players get the hang of the mechanics, and the player boards/aides are very helpful with this. The rondel board is modular to help with longevity of the game in addition to the variable deck building aspect of the game. One possible negative is that the game length can go long with 4 players depending on the style of play of the players. Also, the rulebook has some omissions of pretty key rules. Luckily, the FAQ on BGG does a good job of filling in the blanks. All things considered, this is a great game, and I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy this style of game.

Fun and challenging for Solo Players

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

So far I've played 5 games solo and I've lost all five. I've played various AI players and each one is a challenge to play against, knowing that it will take whatever action it wants without cost or effort. I will continue to play it because it's engaging and fun, the production value of the game is phenomenal and I'm looking forward to the expansions on KS coming soon.

I've played Architects and Paladins - at least 25 times each solo. I've played Viscounts 3 times solo. I'm not sure I like knowing the AI strategy before the game starts. I know what the Ai will focus on before I pick my cards/resources. It gives the impression that playing solo is just practice. I don't feel that way when playing Paladins. Viscounts has great components and the cards are like the other games with great art. Mechanisms are different than the other two previous games, including some deck-building. Viscounts is a worthy part of the excellent West Kingdom trilogy.

Great solo and multiplayer

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I love this game. The components are great and the gameplay is really fun. It's one of those games where you get to do a lot of things on your turn to feel like you've accomplished a lot. However, the downtime isn't too bad if people really think about what they're going to do during other players' turns. The solo mode is particularly great since it eliminates all downtime. You get basically the same experience as the multiplayer game (since there isn't a lot of player interaction anyway). The AI's turns are extremely simple to execute, meaning that you get to spend most of your time thinking about what you want to do. Highly recommended!

Viscounts is a Winner

The stew of mechanisms provides a rich puzzle for a crunchy euro-tastic good time (if you're into that sort of thing).
