Forbidden Desert = great co-op game!

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

We've played this game just once so far, and lost at the very end, but enjoyed the game anyway! The game components are an excellent quality, and they look great when you put the game out to play. The mechanics of the game are my favorite part -- with the simple draw of 1-2 cards, the game shifts from going well to oh no, now what?. There are some similarities to Forbidden Island, also by GameWright, but there's plenty of difference if you play both. We look forward to playing this game again very soon!

Fantastic Game - Can play solo

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

One of my most played games. I tend to play it solo and just take on two or three characters. It's the perfect game to pull out when I want to play a game, but my game group isn't available. The different difficultly levels as well as the different characters provide so much replay ability. The rules are quick to explain so it is also great to introduce to new people. I highly recommend!

You are traveling over the desert in your space craft when suddenly parts start falling off. You crash land into the sand dunes and begin the hunt for the pieces scattered about. Easy instructions to learn, you have 4 actions you can take on your turn. You start by moving around the tiles and flipping them over to search for your things. The storm moves around the board after everyone's turn, causing sand dunes to build up on the tiles. You have to excavate the tiles with the sand built up and see whats at the bottom, is the engine or just some land under there? Sometimes there's so much sand built up it could take all 4 of your actions to get to the bottom. Play quick because if you take too long you could end up drawing 4, 5 or 6 cards for the storm and that's when the game gets real! The more cards you draw for the storm, the more it moves around. Will you be buried alive or will you get the to landing pad and get out before the storm picks up?

A fun multiplayer game suitable for kids

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

This game is very very similar to forbidden island. However it is a little more complex and has better bits. Fun to play with people of all ages, it has a nice little toy steampunk ship that you get to build which kids love.

Great cooperative game that you can't beat for the price

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This is a great cooperative game that provides a puzzly challenge along with engaging game play. The story of the game is that you have crashed your flying machine in the desert and you need to find all the components of your ship before you are lot in a terrible sandstorm. The components of this game are top notch. The board is made up of thick tiles that feel substantial. The markers for sand are also great and are double sided to help the players remember which tiles they are able to traverse through. There is a small replica of your flying ship with its parts which is part of the allure of the game. The parts of the ship feel sturdy and I was surprised at the quality for a game in this price point. The game play is similar to other cooperative games like Pandemic and Flash Point: Fire Rescue. Each player takes on a role that has a special ability unique to them. On their turn, a player will have a number of action points to spend to move, clear sand, or excavate (flip over a tile). Players will need to search the board to find the parts to their ship and ultimately the landing pad to leave. During the searches the players may gain cards with special powers up like a Dune Blaster or Jet Pack. Also, they may find a oasis so they can refill their water or a tunnel that will protect them from the sun and allow them to quickly move around the board. The added challenge comes with the storm deck and the sand storm that will cover tiles with sand and in some cases bury the players. They will have to dig themselves out before being able to move. As a result of the sandstorm, the board will move around a bit and make long term planning a little more difficult for the players. Also in the storm deck are cards that will reduce the water in the players' canteen. This game can be challenging since there are multiple ways to lose the game but only one way to win. But when you do manage a win, it is a great feeling.
