This game is very balanced. I've played with my wife and 3 of our 4 kids ranging from 6-13, and other than our first game, each game has been tight. Not only was it simple to teach, but it was simple for them to discover their own working strategies. There's drama in where each person goes because there's almost never a bad choice to make on your turn. The biggest factor is if you have money by the time we get to the Inn. It's also a fast game. Within maybe 20min, I can remind the fam that we're already half way through the game. I should mention, although I prefer playing with the individual player powers any time I can, and my fam has no challenges when playing with them...I see them enjoying the game more when we don't play with them because they retain the freedom to adapt with 7 money to start with, than trying to play to the strength of their given character and getting easily blocked early, so we do play more without them than we do with them. Again, I think that speaks to the versatility of the game.

We love this game! When it's just my wife and I we'll get the new Tokaido Duo, but Tokaido has been a favorite of ours for years and until recently we only ever played our friends' copy. Now that we have our own we can teach it to our kids!
