In the early 1940s it was decided that the US Army needed a vehicle larger than the standard US Army 1/2-ton truck. The 1/2-ton vehicle proved too light for most requirements and, in 1941, the Dodge 3/4-ton truck was born.

The vehicle was utilized in a wide variety of roles in the Army. It was used in all theatres of WWII and with other armies such as the British, French and Soviet.
