Not necessary, but looks awesome. Can't wait to paint it.

Too much of this game involves keeping an eye on the depth track. Which makes it infuriating when someone knocks into the cardboard punch out that came with the core game box and changes everything. So having a plastic version saves so many headaches.

I got this for the cards, but the hard track is much more visible and easier to use during play because the markers don't slip around. Glad I got it.

This depth track makes it where it is hard to mess up by bumping the table. Literally would take a table flip to mess up!

Unlike the cardboard depth tracker you can't bump the rings out of place, and it comes with some extra cards.

So this is just a bling device and some extra cards but as long as you understand that it is excellent. It’s much bigger that I expected and raised and angled such that it’s easy to see. The rings also can’t slide like the normal track and that alone is worth it for me.

Excellent addition to the core game

As others have said, this is a nice add on but is not required at all. It is a nice piece to have on the table and if things are bumped around the markers do not slide around. Fun to paint as well.

We live in an age of bling. Crowdfunded boardgame projects will add a simple ink wash for an additional $50-$100, not to mention scads of plastic bits and metal coins. So it’s nice to get bling that you get to spend a little time prepping! The Shadows of Brimstone Depth Tracker is a great project for newer painters, as it’s nice and big, doesn’t have a ton of difficult areas to paint (and not a lot of colors) but will give a lot of lessons of how to paint smaller minis, and it looks great when it’s done. It even comes with a painting guide if you want to use the SoB Army Painter paint sets, although you can probably generate the equivalents from any acrylics you have laying around. In play, it really adds to the atmosphere, even adding some noise as you take the markers on and off of their placeholders. Plus some extra cards to mix things up a bit. At this price, it’s a great addition, if not strictly necessary, and a fun painting project that won’t take a huge amount of time and with perhaps a bit less skin in the game as you can learn drybrushing and highlighting nicely with this model. And, it’s plastic, so no funky resin to deal with! And no assembly, so you just need clippers to get it out of it’s sprue.
