In 16689, Louis XIV had accepted what he saw as humiliating terms at the peace conference held at the German city of Aachen. The Dutch Republic played a key role in curing Louis' expansionist plans, and he never forgave what he saw as a betrayal by an erstwhile ally. His plans of revenge came to fruition in 1672. By secret treaties, he detached the Republic's allies, Sweden and England. Louis himself would lead the main invasion, unexpectedly from the east, famously crossing the Rhine at the Dutch frontier Lobith. England would launch an invasion from the sea with the combined Anglo-French fleets. But the French, almost literally at the gates of Amsterdam, were baffled by the Dutch Waterline defenses. At sea, the heavily outnumbered Dutch fleet under De Ruyter repeatedly defeated his opponents. By the end of August 1673, the new Dutch government under William of Orange had signed a triple alliance with Spain and Austria. The Dutch War was over; the war for Europe had begun. No Peace Without Honor is a companion game to Nine Years and No Peace Without Spain. A new countersheet provides additional leaders, such as the young Prince William, or the skilled veterans Turenne and Condé. The Sun King himself, Louis XIV, makes an appearance. Through a new set of event cards, players recreate famous naval battles, fight colonial wars, or see the death of key leaders.
