The Cities of the Tsarina @ 01:01:07

It is the year 1762. Recently, after a coup d'état, Catherine the Great was proclaimed the new tsarina. You take on the roles of counselors and try to win Catherine's favor, so that she will appoint you as the most important person of trust to be at her side at the end of the game. The possibilities are many: You can focus on the expansion of the empire, opt for a martial orientation, engage in the booming trade in goods, or set your mind on the arts. By the end, Catherine will decide who impressed her the most.

Catherine: The Cities of the Tsarina distinguishes itself by an innovative card mechanism. With each card, you need to weigh whether to use it for carrying out an action or for activating other cards. Every decision counts - be it to generate majorities or to improve actions. Since all players play simultaneously, there is no idle time. The possibilities are many, but which one will be the best to impress Catherine? It's in your hands!

This game has hand management and action selection which is pretty interesting. Is quick to play and has easy rules. The art and theme is well made.

Overlooked Gem

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Unfortunately this excellent game has been unfairly maligned for having an historic theme. This is an excellent primarily-card game with a unique and fun mechanism for triggering your multi-use cards. This is thinky without being draining and gives you a nice euro experience in under an hour. The production is pleasant in appearance and seems to legitimatly offer different paths to victory. I think it is a package that generates a desire for repeat plays.

Don’t pass on this game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Because of the timing of Russia’s War with Ukraine the game received a lot of negative pushback. However, all of that could be solved by doing a retheme. The game sets up in about three minutes and plays in under an hour. A masterpiece of a game hindered by setting choice and unfortunate timing. Don’t pass on this incredible game!

It is now one of our favorites

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

The game has fairly short, well explained rules with good examples of key parts. The game sets up in 5 minutes or less. We’ve played the game twice and because of the randomness of the cards we were compelled to use different strategies. As others have noted, it is a very “thinky” game. I really enjoyed the decisions I had to make. We are looking forward to our 3rd play! The
