Gen Con Nightly Roundup

"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is the unknown."
- H.P. Lovecraft

In the sleepy town of Arkham, Massachusetts, a small band of intrepid investigators seeks to uncover the nature of a sinister menace that threatens humanity. But beware! The arcane realm holds countless terrors, and the investigators must take care to maintain a tenuous grip upon their very sanity, and survive.

Arkham Horror LCG is a one or two player cooperative game in which each player assumes the role of an investigator and attempts to solve terrifying eldritch mysteries. With a second copy of this core set, up to four players can play the game together. Each game is a chapter of a longer campaign, in which decisions carry far-reaching and unexpected consequences. As a Living Card Game, new cards and adventures are released regularly, allowing players to customize the contents of this core set, or to create their own original decks.

The Ancient Ones await. Can any among us uncover their secrets and live to tell the tale?

great game...here are pluses and minuses.
I bought this game with a gift card about 2 years ago, and it has quickly grown to be one of our favorite games. The core set gives you some adventures and challenges, although it really gets valued from the expansions at the campaign level...of course, that adds more cost, so there is a downside.

What I like: it is a cooperative game, and also a story game. Its hard to find games which have both. Your investigator keeps growing in experience, which leads to new cards, and a sort of role playing adventure.

Though the game is random, you can mitigate bad stuff happening to a certain extent with the cards you have. That makes it more of a tactical game.

I love the token pulls in the game. The majority of the tokens for skill tests are negative, putting you in the mind of something bad happening...which fits with the scary theme. And there is the auotfail token, which causes great grief..that is balanced out by the star token, which can cause you to pass the test + use investigator abilities.

Investigators have different classes and are interesting, from fighters to clue gatherers, rogues, survivors and mystics, all these great types are there, yet they are all unique by having special cards to help and special weaknesses to remediate.

Downsides: quality of the pieces is okay, although getting coin capsules will improve the token quality (they can get worn down from usage).

Game is only for 2 people, though you can proxy cards to get 3 with this set. Fantasy Flight encourages you to buy another core set, but it is probably better to buy the expansions to get more cards.

The 3 adventures in the core set are okay at best. The first two are the most exciting, with the Gathering being an introductory scenario. The Midnight Masks is the most fun and where the game shines. The Devourer Below is not as much fun, and is a challenge to get through. All three are a good introduction, but where the games shines is in the deluxe expansions and the mythos packs. ( Note, this costs $, but it is worth it to get the most out of the game). We are on our third expansion, and love the adventures and the cards.

Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a complicated but very fulfilling card game.
Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a complicated but very fulfilling card game. With this set you have enough cards to play with just 2 players that are working cooperatively to battle the horrors that are abound around the town of Arkham. The setup is pretty deep and sorting out the cards takes a little bit of work and thought but once you get to that point it's all downhill from there.

You can either create a couple decks that are already designed and written in the instruction manual for an easy play or once you get more accustomed to how to play you can create your own decks. However I will say that this set does not come with much variety of cards to create your own decks, you will want to pick up one of the MANY expansion decks to really delve deep into creating your own decks.

I really love how you can play through a story campaign with your deck and the effects of what happened to your character and some of the loot you pick up carries over. One section of a story campaign can take as long as a couple hours depending on how well you do so to get through the entire campaign scenario would be a multiple night adventure. What's even more awesome is there are sooooo many campaign expansions and card expansions that can be bought that this is a very good investment for a long term game.

The one downside that I give this (and honestly any Fantasy Flight game for that matter) is the box and packaging. I cannot stress enough that if there is one single thing that Fantasy Flight needs to work on, it's their packaging. Once you get all the tokens punched out and the cards opened there is literally no good way to put them back in this box that comes with a single insert. The cards will go all over the place and mix in with the many tokens, a huge mess. My advice is to go out and buy some smaller plastic bags to individually store the pieces and cards. Considering that you will end up re-using the same deck to play through multiple campaigns, it would have been prudent for the packaging to have at least some sort of plastic insert for storage of a couple decks.

An LCG to call your
This card game manages to overcome the Eldrich Horror in immersibility. It is a game that expands the feeling of living a story H.P.L. The details of the local atmosphere and gameplay are undoubtedly the best game in the cuthulhu universe. The basic box follows a campaign with 3 matches with its history very well articulated. The first players try to solve a situation in the house of one of the investigators, the second they leave the house and depart to disrupt a conspiracy and the third I have not played. The immersion of the game is very great with antagonists and sites for investigation as well as excellent quality gear. Not to mention that the game allows to create several inspirations for the RPG and vice versa, that is, it allows a creative mind adpte (home made) an adventure of RPG for the card game. The community is full of fantastic adaptations. Well worth it, I hope this franchise is very successful.
