LotR . . . Revised Core Set @ 21:40

In The Lord of the Rings LCG, players assemble a hand of adventurers who are attempting to complete dangerous quests in Middle-earth. From teh bright fields of the Shire and dangerous paths of Mirkwood Forest to the mighty kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan, the heroes of this beloved setting join together to resist the threat of the Dark Lord, Sauron.

The Lord of the Rings LCG is a 1-4 player cooperative game in which players work together, competing against scenarios controlled by the game. As a Living Card Game, additional cards and quests are available in future expansions, further allowing players to customize the contents of this set, or to create their own original decks.

The new revised edition adds three new card types to the game: campaign cards, boons and burdens. These cards are all used in a new campaign mode included within the Revised Core Set that wouldn't normally be found in the original edition.

If you already own everything from The Lord of the Rings LCG, you do not need to buy the Revised Core Set to experience this campaign - instead, all campaign cards, boons, and burdens will be made freely available as print-and-play content on the publisher's website. We will also be posting the campaign rules and campaign log to the site as well, which means anyone who owns a core set for this game - original or otherwise - will be able to fully experience this new mode.

Great Re-release

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

As someone who did not initially jump on LOTR LCG, this is a great way to dive into a fantastic game I've been reading about for years. Hopefully my wallet can sustain, for the will of man is weak!

we played twice in a row

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

i was reluctant to delve into LotR card game wondering if ti would be overly mechanical. the up front learning seems a lot but YouTube video walkthroughs made it easy. after the second or third round we totally understood it (4 player) and loved the first game. so much that we immediately played a second game, which says a lot because we normally go through our library for variety.

Incredible solo play

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I owned the original version of this and enjoyed it, but didn't get very far with it for reasons I cannot recall. However, for a solo deck building game, it's incredibly complex and replayable in a tcg way without the need of having someone else to play with. Initially, the rules are a lot. I read the rules and watched a teach you to play video I found. Once that was done, I've found myself playing over and over. Trying new decks as much as I could with the core decks (already bought additional expansions). It's challenging, fun, thought provoking, and it feels like lord of the rings. The art is incredible and the little quotes on each card brings me back to the books and movies. If you like solo deck games, this is one you should checkout.

Great Card Game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

I love anything with the Lord of the Rings theme. I really enjoyed this card game, in spite of the fact that my brother-in-law and I lost the first 3 times we played it … 😊 … but won the 4th time! We’ve only tried the first set of quests; can’t wait to try out some of the expansions. So far I feel it has a “Magic the Gathering” type of sense to it, but as a cooperative game, instead of pitting one player against another.

Great solo/coop game, maybe one of the best, but not for everyone

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

This is, hands down, one of the best solo games I own, maybe the best. I love the difficulty, the depth of rules, and the replayability and variety it has. You would want this game if you're looking for a great solo and co-op game that is fun, complex, challenging, and highly replayable. Or if you like Magic: The Gathering but hate how you have to constantly chase the latest and greatest, or maybe just don't like the competitiveness of it, or you don't know anyone to play against. This scratches a similar itch for me, even though I also occasionally play Magic. If you like a game that offers difficult choices, personalization, and depth in strategy and design then you probably want this game. If you like deckbuilding, you can do that, although if you hate deckbuilding you don't have to do it either. The rule books will give you decklists, and ringsdb has tons of great decks. In my opinion, your first and best try at deckbuilding should just be taking one of the starter decks and removing cards that you never want or get a chance to use until you're down to about 30-40 cards. It is the quickest and easiest way to make your deck more effective. Not tournament legal, but you'll win more often. On the other hand, you might not like how difficult it is to grasp the rules. You can get up and playing rather quickly if you watch a tutorial or spend about 20 minutes reading the rulebook AND have prior card game experience in things like Magic, but you will quickly realize you are either getting a few rules wrong or as you buy cards you will realize there are just some nuances you didn't even notice. No big deal, just fix your understanding, reshuffle the cards, and play again - you're only in for about 30 minutes so no harm no foul. But I can see how some people could be put off by the depth of the rules. For comparison, I find it simpler than Magic: The Gathering so if you've played a game like that then you'll be fine after a few tries. The game is also very difficult. If you have thin skin, not much time, or little patience then this game may not be for you. However, there are easy modes you can play which I hear are just as fun. If you think you might like this game, then I wouldn't worry about the difficulty too much. There is also inherent randomness because it's a card game. If that sounds bad, then this may be trouble for you. Overall I highly recommend this one. It is my favorite card game in my collection, and definitely in the top 5 of all games I own. Don't be afraid to try before you buy, however, as there are websites that will let you play the game for free to see if it is something you might like.

Lord the Rings The Card Game - Revised Core

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Great Co-op game with lots of replayability out of the box. Adding in a single expansion, from which there are numerous, opens even more replability. LoTR LCG can be a difficult game, but finding a way to punch through a difficult quest is fulfilling.

Great re-release

Finally, ALL cards x3 so I don't have to buy 3 copies of the core set just to build one good deck!

Much Needed Revision

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

For their living card games, FFG has followed the practice of making a core set that serves as an introduction to the game--these core sets have enough to get you started, but not enough to play the game in full. This would allow them to sell the core set for much less than they could otherwise, making the expense of trying the game much less prohibitive. For players who liked this introduction and wanted to play the game properly, a second core set was often considered important. This revised core set removes that need entirely. If you are buying the game for the first time, this is the only core set you will need. Should you buy this if you have the original core set? My answer would be that, if you were planning on buying a second, you should. If you already have two (or three), there isn't much point to purchasing this. On top of being a new printing that updates the cards with the latest errata, the game includes 3 copies of all player cards (except heroes), whereas the original core set came with only one or two copies of some player cards. This revised edition contains 4 threat dials (instead of 2) of a smaller, more convenient size, and a lot more tokens. In addition to having additional much-needed tokens, some of the additional resource, progress, and damage tokes are larger and marked with 3s and 5s, which is a tremendous convenience. The final difference is the addition of rules for playing the three included scenarios as a short campaign. This is a great introduction to the campaign rules seen in the LotR Saga expansions.
