Q&A with Para-Bellum Games' Head of Global Sales and Marketing, Daryl McKay
How long has this set been in the making?
This, and most of our sets, have been in the thought process for a decade. Our founder Stavros Halkias has been working on the story lines for Eä for a very long time. There are over 20 factions planned and hundreds of campaigns still to be written as part of the world of Conquest. This two player set brings together the newest factions released for Conquest. The thematic of the magical elemental fighters in the Sorcerer Kings matched with the Spartan themed army of the City States is a great combination for Wargamers.
Do you have any behind the scenes stories about creating the set?
Two things come to mind. One, we worked hard to make this set different from the one player sets that were already in the market. Companion Cavalry is a new City States infantry set added to the two player sets, and there was a lot of discussion about whether adding a brand new set was wise. Ultimately, we wanted fans to have the newest items and this set showcases that.
The second was that we added to the first 1,000 sets made, the limited edition Sorcerer model in an alt spell casting pose. We felt it added value and made a nice surprise for new Conquest players.
What piece do you think players will be most excited about?
I think it depends on which faction out of the box they are playing. The Djinn for the Sorcerer Kings are really beautiful, ethereal and really fun to paint. And as noted before, the Companion Cavalry for City States are a great look for the Spartans.
Is this set for newer players or more experienced players?
Both! Newer players will find these sets more approachable from a build and paint standpoint, with clear instructions, and quick start rules to learn. All of our rulesets are free online and in our Companion App, so as they pick up the basics of game play, they can add to their learnings easily for the provided rule sets for either game - First Blood (fast paced skirmish) and Last Argument of Kings (rank and flank mass fantasy battles).
An experienced player will love the savings and the models being added to their current armies, or they can expand into a new faction.
What's your favorite miniature in the set?
I am not allowed to have a favorite, contractually.... as a good parent :)
Any tips for painting the new faction?
Explore your color palette, especially the paints you have not used in awhile. Our models welcome creativity!
