Video Vortex is a competitive deck-building game for 2-4 players set in a radioactive future Earth inhabited by video-obsessed mutants. Each genre-worshiping character must strategically employ their individual mutant powers while battling opponents and navigating game effects in an attempt to seize control of the wasteland.

On their respective turns, players will spend energy to play special cards, power their deck with rentals from the local video store, and eject chosen cards from play to weaken foes. Runtime, the measure of mutant health, is limited and unique to each character. By advancing an opponent's runtime beyond their limit through Lo-Fi and Hi-Fi attacks, mutants collect "Be Kind" tokens as trophies representative of their conquest. Once three distinctive trophies have been collected, victory is declared by the reigning champion.

Excellent strangely themed deck-build

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

An excellent deck-builder. Really great theme, especially for anyone into movies during the Blockbuster years. Not the first deck-builder to take purchased cards into your current hand, but definitely one that allows for epic combos from doing so.

The gameplay is merely great, but the design is mind-blowing

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

A combat-focused deck-builder with asymmetric hero powers and a moderate difficulty curve. Players are mutants who "rent" cards into their hand from the video store and spend energy and charges to play cards and use power. Your goal is to "fast-forward" each other's health and kill them in order to collect trophies. When you die, you respawn instantly. You can only attack one person at a time, so you have to plan out your damage carefully because you only get a point if you get the kill. The gameplay is solid and inventive, but it's the design where this game really shines. The components are high quality, the art is gorgeous and the whole thing is infused with a dark, twisted 80s-notalgia aesthetic and sense of humor. Best with three or four players.
