Rob's Top 25 of Gen Con 2017

Two obstacles to interstellar flight were solved in the 22nd Century: Hyperdrives to actually get us to other planets, and cloning technology to replace our bodies and brains from backups in the inevitable situation something goes wrong on the trip. Peacetime advancements released the vast resources of a sea of stars like a cosmic pinata. We need capable explorers. The more dangers that present themselves, the more opportunities for lowly travelers to ascend to become true heroes. There's a lot of emergencies happening on board your starship. Will you be a hero when the time arises?

Battlestations is a tabletop starship simulator - a multi-map board game that simultaneously features ship-action in space AND the events on board the ships involved in the conflicts. It is also a roleplaying game in which your characters grow throughout campaigns, picking up experience points, upgrades, and new abilities.,br>
The game rules are very simple but they allow for complex RPG-like imaginative choices like teleporting to an enemy ship, hacking their helm controls and steering their ship towards a black hole before ejecting yourself out the air lock. Inside the box is an infinity of alien worlds to explore, rickety spacecrafts to upgrade, and a rowdy crew of lifelong comrades to adventure with.

One player takes on the role of "the enemy", and works against the other players who are cooperating with each other.

Big and basically an RPG

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Battle stations in a sprawling game, the minis leave something to be desired but the tiles for building custom ships are quite generally usable. While it can be played as a one vs many board game, it's likely better suited as a framework for an RPG. The advanced rules for this product move it in that direction. That others use Traveler of GURPS with these resources.

A lot of bang for your buck

I love playing RPG's and Board games, this is both games in one. You get a bunch of minis, game boards and bits and pieces for the price. The mini quality is better than average, and they can paint up nice, but some sculpts are better than others. If you are like me you have a bunch of other games/minis you can proxy what you want. Some sculpts I do not like, but I love some of the others. The "game board" is good thick card board and you can set up different ship configurations and missions. The component quality is really good. I recommend getting the extra book, its not a requirement, but it adds so much to it. There is only one ship mini in the game, and the rest are cardboard. I proxy other games ships with this. Get some meeples or firefly or Xwing ships if you want. The Gameplay is really good if you like RPG's with a Game master / enemy leader going against all of the players. All in all the core box is a great value but for 50 bucks get the extra book and for less than $150 you will have a game that could last years

Great game. Expensive, but worth it.

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

First, bias disclosure: I run this game for the developer at a couple of cons per year, and wouldn't if I didn't feel it was worth supporting. I get no perks, pay or kickbacks for promoting or reviewing the game - I just think it's a ton of fun. Objectively, however, this is a wonderful investment for any GM who gets tired of rules-heavy RPGs and coming up endless encounters and campaign narratives. The rules are easy to pick up and just as easy to run, and the advanced rulebook has TONS of detailed missions that can be run as stand alone one-shots (great for that breather session after you TPK'd your party), or can be strung together as its own full campaign. The price point is heavy, but you get what you pay for. The box is over ten pounds of game, with high-quality chipboard board modules, plenty of tokens for whatever mission you run, 40+ pre-generated character cards with amazing artwork, a full deck of plot twist cards for the referee, and over 40 unique, high-quality 28mm plastic minis based on the in-game lore (unpainted). This game's true value, in my opinion, is that it can play as either an RPG or a classic board game, without the clunky feel that players often experience with many other cross-genre games. Whichever play style your table prefers that night, this game effortlessly delivers, with minimum setup/planning time on the GM's part.
