A simply beautiful reprint by GMT of a game originally printed by Victory Games in 1985 - Pacific War is a masterpiece by Mark Herman. There are no fewer than 4 levels of scenarios, going from the 20-minute resolution of the attack on Pearl Harbor, all the way up to 5 different strategic scenarios, and ultimately (if you should ever dare) the complete Pacific War, from the initial Japanese operations to seize valuable resource locations, all the way to the U.S. dropping the A-bombs, and forcing the surrender of Japan. Mark Herman's design involves a marvelous, telescoping system of activities, wherein play at the highest level involves task forces of unknown composition moving in danger of being revealed by reconnaissance aircraft and turns lasting days or weeks. Once contact is established, things zoom down to allow closer inspection of forces, and turns representing shorter and shorter periods of time. GMT has done a fantastic job with this monster of components, that still allows tense play for a few hours or less, in the smaller scenarios. it's all here, the entire Pacific War, presented in bite-sized pieces, and it could take an entire lifetime to enjoy it all. There is simply no better bang for your wargaming buck than Pacific War.

I do wonder how many people will ever play the full campaign version of this giant game. Fortunately there are smaller scenarios included so you can still utilize all the great components.

Pacific War allows you to recreate all the battles of the Pacific War. The rulebooks are designed in a way that allows you to play in a modular system. There are 4 scenario types that involve various phases of the full system. It's meant to be played in a single battle or campaign mode, but not the full war. There are a few scenario that are for the full war, although not recommended as the playing time could be hundreds of hours to complete. Great game though!

So I ordered this 10 pound game from Miniature Market and am not disappointed. The game is really multiple games in one. Each scenario builds upon the last one in complexity. Solitaire ratings are low but you can play it solitaire. Iproduction quality is excellent.
