Schooners were fast and very maneuverable ships, mostly used to relay commands and orders up and down the main line of battle, thanks to their gaff-rigged sail configuration. The most famous schooner of all is HMS Pickle that brought to England the news of the British victory at Trafalgar. They were also popular with smugglers and privateers because of their size and speed.
