The Battle of Five Armies is back! The epic game that recreates the fierce struggle witnessed by Bilbo Baggins at the end of his quest to the Lonely Mountain is coming back in a revised edition.

The Battle of Five Armies is a two-player game that allows you to re-create the epic conclusion of The Hobbit, the world-renowned masterpiece by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Shadow player commands the armies of Bolg, the King of the Goblins of Mount Gundabad, while the Free Peoples player is in control of Men, Dwarves, and Elves, led by Gandalf to fend off the goblin army.

Based on the acclaimed mechanics first used in the War of the Ring boardgame, The Battle of Five Armies merges action dice and event cards, to make each game a unique experience. The system has been further enhanced by the addition of the "Fate Track" mechanic, handling the arrival of the allies and the triggering of special events. The Battle of Five Armies includes 126 plastic figures, with all the main characters of the battle, and many more top-quality components.

Another!

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Once again, Ares Games makes a beautiful board game with some great miniatures. Including the Fate of Erebor expansion, is just another plus. Certainly a recommend from me, it pairs nicely with their War of the Ring line.

The Battle of Five Armies review

It is a good game. It is not very hard, though you will need some time to learn the rules. Because there are action dice and cards, which give different opportunities every round, you can play this game again and again, and every game will be different. There are many nice components. I love this game.

Way better than the movies!

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Built off the bones of Ares’ War of the Ring board games. The components are high quality, rules clearly written, and the miniatures well detailed. The game follows the beats of the final battle in the Hobbit, but is not encumbered by them, and everything is thematic and fun.

If you like War of the Ring, but don’t necessarily have the time for it, this is a great, slightly shorter alternative!

Great Middle Earth Slug Fest!

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

A worthy successor to its big brother--WOTR--and a beautifully designed game in its own right. Asymmetrical sides clash in a cauldron at the foot of Lonely Mountain. The designers obviously love the book and the game sits very close to the text, making this a class act that shows respect and love for a literary classic.
