On November 10, 1982, Leonid Brezhnev died. A string of aged successors come to power but in the end, the fall of the Soviet Union was inevitable. Many of the younger generals and politicians in the Soviet Union saw this coming - and in this alternate history, they refused to stand by as this happened. Seizing power, the Young Guard (as they would be known) succeeded Brezhnev and refused to let the Soviet Union die. They contrived a complex plot to drive the world towards war. They stirred up trouble in a place America was sure to respond, Central America, and took the world to the brink of war. And then, they backed down and seemed to concede that peace was their goal. This ruse put the Western Powers in a false sense of security. When the war came, the West was caught completely by surprise.
The main goal was to destroy NATO - that would be done in Germany, but no less important were the vital flanks. To the south of Germany, lay Italy - its forces must be kept under pressure so they could not reinforce the flight to the north. And even farther south, the key Bosporus straights and access the Mediterranean beckoned. The Soviet Union had spent massive political capital to keep the key country of Yugoslavia in the fold - but it might fracture at any moment. Romania, Hungary, and Bulgaria cracked down on their populations as the moment came. Could this fragile alliance stay together long enough for the Western world to be brought to her knees?
The Doomsday Project is a series of interlocking games covering the World War that never was. The war fought throughout the globe, and this project will cover many of those campaigns. Episode One was the battle for Germany. Episode Two, the Battle of the Balkans, covers the vital southern flank. Spanning from the northern plains of Italy all the way south to the Mediterranean, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and fragile Yugoslavia would attack the NATO forces of Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Spain stood ready to assist and vulnerable Austria and even little Albania were likely to be swept up in the grand plan for Soviet domination of the world. As will happen with each additional episode of
The Doomsday Project, new rules will be added to cover another aspect of this struggle. In this episode, political rules have been added that significantly increase the political drama that would have occurred behind the scenes.
The Doomsday Project covers this massive area at 12 kilometers a hex and the divisions off the Warsaw Pact arrayed against the Brigades of NATO. This game uses the Operational Scale System using new design concepts and mechanisms to present a modern look at this great war that thankfully never happened. Owners of the first game are provided rules to join the first two episodes together in a grand campaign for the future of Central and Southern Europe.
